Jay County Court House
Located in East Central Indiana, Jay County is west of its neighbor Mercer County in Ohio; Jay County was created February 7, 1835 and is named after John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Jay County covers 377 square miles and is centrally located between Ft. Wayne and Richmond on US 27, and is 30 miles northeast of Muncie on State Road 67. Jay County or Jayland as it is commonly referred, is divided into twelve townships: Bearcreek, Greene, Jackson, Jefferson, Knox, Madison, Noble, Penn, Pike, Richland Wabash and Wayne. Wayne township contains the county court house located in Portland, which is the largest population center of Jay County. Other cities and towns in Jayland are Bryant, Dunkirk, Pennville, Redkey and Salamonia.
